Poker Odds

Poker odds describe how likely a hand is to improve or to win from a given point, and they come from counting the cards that remain unseen. The working tools are few: count your outs, convert them to a probability, and compare that probability with the price the pot offers. Every odds calculator does exactly this, only faster.

Omaha Poker Odds Calculator: Checking the Math by Hand

What are outs, and how do I count them?

An out is an unseen card that would give you the best hand. With four cards to a flush after the flop, nine cards of that suit remain among the 47 you have not seen, so you have nine outs. Cards that complete your hand but also hand an opponent something better are not true outs, which is where careful counting earns its keep.

How do outs become percentages?

Divide the outs by the unseen cards for one card to come, or work out the chance of missing twice for two cards to come and subtract it from one. A quick approximation multiplies outs by four on the flop (two cards to come) and by two on the turn (one card to come). The shortcut drifts from the exact figure as outs grow, so the exact count is worth knowing.

What are pot odds and equity?

Equity is your share of the pot if the hand were played out many times from here. Pot odds compare the size of a call with the size of the pot. When your equity is larger than the share of the final pot you are being asked to pay, a call shows a profit over the long run. A single hand can still go either way.

Why does Omaha change the arithmetic?

In Omaha each player holds four hole cards and must use exactly two of them with three from the board. There are 270,725 possible four-card starting hands, and preflop equities run much closer together than in Hold'em. Players who forget the two-card rule count flushes and straights they cannot actually make.

How does the reading room cover odds?

Entries show the counting behind each figure, so a reader can audit any calculator or chart rather than trust it. Start with the Omaha poker odds calculator entry, which checks a tool's output by hand. For where the underlying frequencies come from, see the shelf on poker hands.
